"You've been studying ghosts, right?" Anne asked. "I'm kind of curious about that. I mean, I've heard rumors of people not ascending to the heavens before, but I want to know how it actually works."
Verge gave his partner an odd look. She'd never mentioned this interest in ghosts to him before. Why was she so curious about it now?

Miriel's excitement at the question showed clearly. "I am very happy you asked!" she said gleefully, before taking a good deep breath (as this was most likely going to be a lengthy explanation) "The thing about spirits- as far as I've studied, that is- is that they usually remain in the mortal realm for one reason or another, though whether or not they know the exact reason is another matter entirely in certain cases. Of course, the most common type of ghost is a restless spirit, which is usually caused by a traumatic death of some sort, like a murder, for example. These can quickly become vengeful spirits in most cases but, it is different for every case." she took a brief pause for breath "As for what these sort of spirits can do exactly, that is a topic that is still debated upon by my country's greatest scholars in the subject. It is common-held knowledge, however, that only those with certain gifts, or those who use certain devices- with varying levels of success- can communicate with them, and see them, for that matter. Of course, there are some spirits who take the initiative in communication, making noise, moving things around, things like that." pause for another breath. "But, like I said, it varies for every case- I could give you the draft of my thesis you know, if you want further knowledge on the subject."
Lizzie stood stock still for a moment, simply staring at Miriel "...you sure that wasn't your thesis right there?"
The scholar shook her head "oh, heavens no! I go into much more detail in the paper!"

Anne just stared at Miriel for a moment, either out of shock or some weird form of pity, but then came to her senses. "Oh, that's, um, interesting," she said. "So, what you're saying is that some spirits don't ascend to the heavens because they have goals they still want to accomplish, and some of them can interact with the world in ways that will help them do that?"
Verge kept watching the conversation with annoyance. Why hadn't Anne ever expressed this interest in ghosts to him? They were supposed to be partners, after all, and he was sure he could've helped her research some of this stuff. Suddenly, he felt a sense of loneliness creep over him, and he quickly looked around the forest. For some reason, the idea of a ghost hanging around unnerved him.

"That is the basis of one scenario." Miriel said simply, ignoring the looks the others gave her "of course, there are other scenarios, what with curses and such but, the answer to the question is basically "yes". There are some spirits who have certain goals, and might have the means to try and achieve them. Any particular reason for your sudden curiosity?"

"Oh, you know, I was just thinking of home. Nobody where I'm from has ever been able to prove that human ghosts exist, and since you were here I thought I'd ask," Anne replied, impressed with how smoothly the lie came out. "But, I should probably get going to town again. Thanks!"
Verge gave Anne an expectant look as she flew past him again, but she just shrugged at him and flew on by.
"Did you hear that?" Anne asked Ed as she caught up to him.

"Every word." he replied, astounded by not only the extent of Miriel's knowledge on the subject, but also how fast she could talk. "why did you want to know if I had "ghost magic" anyway?"

"Well, you went and made me paranoid about being alone, and we got on the topic, and... I dunno, I guess I'm curious about ghosts. I never knew they could actually exist."
With the idea of ghosts stuck in his head, Verge was getting seriously uncomfortable. If Anne was concerned about them, then he definitely had a reason to be concerned too, right? He moved a bit closer to Lizzie and Miriel, trying to convince himself that he could protect them from a ghost, and not the other way around.

"you're a celestial being, shouldn't you know this sort of thing?!" Ed exclaimed, frustrated with the overall situation.
Meanwhile, Lizzie noticed Verge's worried expression. "Hey, what's wrong?" she asked, concerned.

Anne took offense at that. "I may RESIDE in the Celestia, but that doesn't mean I automatically know everything about the afterlife! All I know is that a lot of spirits float past my house every day, I never realized that some spirits might just stick around on Titania!" She glanced back at the others worriedly, realizing herself. The last thing she needed was for Lizzie and Miriel to think she was screaming at herself like a crazy person. "Anyway, I don't like it when there's something I know nothing about. Okay?"
Verge couldn't exactly answer much beyond yes or no questions, but he sighed and pointed off in Anne's direction anyway, hoping Lizzie would get the idea.

"Do you think I'm completely comfortable with this? Trust me, I'm not." Ed said, taking deep breath, and adding "Look, this could be a...learning experience. I'll try to figure out what I can and can't do, and you'll figure it out too, I'm sure..."
"Worried about Anne?" Lizzie asked, trying her best to communicate with someone who was voiceless, despite her lack of experience. Miriel, meanwhile, had gone back to her book, and kept a surprisingly steady pace all the while.

"Well, I'm all for learning experiences..." Anne said. She figured that as long as she had to deal with being the only one to know about Ed, she might as well get something out of it.
Verge nodded, pointed at Miriel's ghost-book, then tapped himself and shrugged. Anne always managed to understand when he did stuff like this, so he thought that maybe Lizzie could catch on.

"Then it seems we've reached a compromise." he said simply "the only other thing I ask is that you continue to keep this a secret, okay? I...I'd prefer to stay hidden, at this point- well, hidden to everyone else, at least..."
"Something to do with ghosts?" Lizzie questioned, thinking it over a moment, before adding "Is Anne doing something with a ghost, or something? Getting interested in the subject of ghosts?" she laughed a bit "I guess Miriel's rubbing off on her!"

Maybe Lizzie was right, and he was getting all worked up over nothing. It still bothered him that he'd never heard about this interest in ghosts before, but then, there was never really a reason for it to come up. He kept looking at Miriel's book, longing for a fluent reading ability now more than ever.
"Your secret's safe..." Anne began, but she stopped when she heard voices coming from off from the distance. "We must be near the town." They had passed the river a while back, and the trees had begun to thin out slightly, but she still couldn't make out any buildings.
The voices were growing louder, and Anne realized they were children's voices. Two young kids, a boy and a girl, came running through the trees, playing some sort of chasing game, but when they noticed Anne they stopped and stared at her. "She has wings..." one whispered to the other.
'Most awkward situation I've ever been in.' Anne thought, but she smiled anyway and greeted the kids. "Um, hi there! Are you two kids from the village... Oh, what's it called..."
"Why do you have wings?!" The boy blurted out.
"Oh, well, I'm a fairy. You know. And we have wings. I'm sorry, but do you think you two could bring me to your guys' home? I'm Anne, by the way."
The two kids looked at each other, had a brief yet intense discussion, then turned back to Anne. "Sure, it's this way!" The girl exclaimed, and they took off back the way they had came.
"God, I hate kids..." Anne moaned.

Ed attempted to restrain his laughter, but failed spectacularly "Well, to their credit I didn't know much about fairies either, before I met you!"
Lizzie turned her attention towards the running children "Hey, Miriel!" she called, snapping the other out of her book-worm induced trance. "We're almost there!" she added, breaking into a run to catch up with the children.
Miriel sighed, closed her book, and took on what could be compared to a light trot of sorts, trying to keep up with Lizzie, and company. "come along then!" she called to the rest of the group before continuing on.

"It's not that they didn't know I was a fairy, it's just that, kids are so... dumb." Anne laughed a bit as she realized what she was saying, but nevertheless she hated dealing with kids. They always freaked out around her; some stared at her without saying anything, some tugged on her wings, some ran away in fear - the only child she had ever gotten along with was Verge when they had first met. "Anyway, let's follow them."
Verge, Miriel, and Lizzie somehow made it to the town before Anne, which worried him a little. The two kids they had been following stayed near the edge of the forest, looking a bit lost for some reason.
Before long, Anne and Ed caught up to the children, who were waiting for them. "We're here!" The boy declared.
"Thank you," Anne said, spotting Verge and the others hanging around a nearby building. She tried to wave goodbye to the kids and leave, but they weren't having it.
"Hey, so, uh, where are you staying?" The girl asked, looking around sheepishly.
"With some friends..." Anne replied, nodding over to her group.
"Oh... Okay then," the girl said, obviously disappointed. "I guess we'll see you around... I'm Cara, by the way."
"And I'm Bryant!" The boy chimed in.
'Leave me alone!' Anne thought. "That's nice. See you around." With that, she flew over to the others, praying to never see those kids again. "Hey, you guys beat me here," she greeted.
