Ed looked up at the sky, dark and clear as ever. The moon was full and shining bright at the pier. The lights of the city glowed even brighter in the distance. He took a long puff of a cigarette "Hurry it up, boys, we're burning moonlight" he said to a group of young men, who were hulling up barrels of dubious content from a small boat. He turned to another young man, standing a bit a ways off from the pier "Any sign of the cops?" There was a visible shake of the head "none, boss" Ed smiled "good. This is a big delivery, boys, we need to take absolute caution"

"Marcus, this... sucks." They had been walking around the city for no more than two hours when Ella simply could not stand it anymore. The whole place was dirty, the people were unfriendly, they didn't seem to understand the concept of magic, and overall it was just a crappy world. She and Marcus had retreated to the pier, where it was quiet, but now that it was dark and cold Ella just wanted to head home. Marcus couldn't even change into a fluffy beast to keep them both warm without running the risk of traumatizing some poor bystanders.
"Well, the water is kind of pretty, right?" Marcus said, hoping that his tone was convincingly cheerful and not just desperate sounding.
"Oh yeah, it's so great. Let's stay here forever and just look at it," Ella replied bitterly. "Do you even know where we are anymore? Because I don't."
Marcus shrugged, but then noticed some people standing not too far away. "We can go ask those guys," he said, pointing.
Figuring what the hell, the duo walked over to the group of men loading some stuff off of a boat. "Hi there, sir," Ella greeted, directed at the person who looked as though he was in charge. "Do you think you could help us find our way back somewhere?"
OOC: FYI, Marcus and Ella are both 14 year old kids. Ella's got light brown hair that's usually in a ponytail, blue eyes, a thin face, and overall she's pretty scrawny. Marcus has dark hair and eyes, is actually pretty muscular but has an innocence in his face that makes him seem pretty nonthreatening.

ooc: got it!
bic: Ed nearly dropped his cigarette "JESUS!" he exclaimed, before realizing that, no, two 14 year olds weren't the police, and trying to act calm. "Sorry, about that, I didn't see you kids. It's dangerous out here at night, you know, lots of...shady figures, and all..." he added, gesturing to the others to continue. He had run into situations like this before, they knew to trust the Valentine silver tongue! ...and, when that didn't work, a simple revolver was very nice too but, they weren't about to shoot at young'ins. It was Ed's policy.

"Psh, I've got nothing to worry about," Ella said, punching Marcus lightly on the shoulder. "So, do you think you could help us get back to our hotel? We've got some friends waiting for us. Unless you're, uh... busy here." She was just noticing the men loading the barrels of stuff. It was incredibly sketchy, but she tried to ignore it. 'Just smile sweetly and ignore the backdrop' was practically her motto when it came to dealing with people of authority.

The men paused for a moment, waiting for their boss' instructions. If there was one thing they knew for sure, it was that Valentine had a soft spot for kids. That said, despite all better judgment, Ed couldn't help himself. "Of course, I'd be more than happy to help." he said, thinking that it would also benefit in other ways, besides aiding youngsters (they were young to him, at least) against the dangers of Chicago night-life, he could also check on Elizabeth. She was out with that Anton guy again, right? but, that was beside the point. He turned to the men "Boys, keep going, I'll be right back. Walker, don't screw anything up while I'm gone." he added before turning back to the two strangers. "Now, where're you guys staying, exactly?"

Ella opened her mouth, but then realized she had no idea. She looked to Marcus for support, but he was just as clueless as she was. "Uh, well, we don't exactly remember..." Ella admitted, "But we'll recognize it as soon as we see it!"
"It was mostly red," Marcus said. "Know any red hotels?"
"What, are we gonna walk into every red building in the goddamned city?" Ella snapped. "I'm sure our guide can figure it out. Who even thought of stupid ideas like hotels anyway? They're... STUPID!" Realizing that was probably a really weird thing to hear for Ed, she pushed Marcus forward. "Um, onwards! Onwards! Shall we?"

Ed groaned mentally "oh you have got to be kidding me..." he said to himself before turning to the others. "Might I ask where your parents are?" he asked, recognizing a rather obvious ruse. "I'm sure they're worried"

"I highly doubt it," Ella replied. Neither of them had any living family whatsoever. "Why do you people always ask about our parents anyway? Why can't we just do our own thing?"
"Ella..." Marcus said quietly, trying to warn her of the imminently awkward discussion that was to come if she didn't shut up.
"No! I am cold, and tired, and hungry, and SICK OF THIS PLACE, and if SOMEONE doesn't stop being a COMPLETE MORON within the next few seconds, I am going to PUNCH A BITCH OUT!"
Marcus took a few steps back, just to be safe.

Ed smirked slightly. He liked this girl's attitude. It would most likely get her killed at the moment but, a spirit like that could help her later on in life. "Listen, kid, I know what it's like to lose family. If you need a place to stay the night, I know a guy. He runs a nice hotel in the heart of the city, and he owes me a favor." he paused for a moment, before adding "and, if anyone asks, you saw nothing at the pier, got it?"

That got her attention.
"What? Why? Why didn't we see anything?" She asked, her eyes narrowing in suspicion.
"Not the place," Marcus said, but at this point it was pretty much hopeless to try to convince her to back off. She had had too rough of a day and was itching for a justified ass-whupping.

Ed realized his idiocy. The kids obviously didn't know about the bootlegging ring (thank God for that) but, Ed knew all too well, people tended to spill about seemingly odd things... and yet, he just stoked the fires of suspicion. Great. Just great. He quickly attempted a recovery "What I mean, is that my buddies and I were out cleaning some stuff up at the pier. However, out of context, it sounds suspcious, you know? People tend to get paranoid these days, and the last thing I was is to leave my sister all alone to fend for herself."

"Remember, we can't make a quick getaway like normal..." Marcus pointed out, stepping in close and wrapping his arm around Ella's. She just shook it off. "BS. I am calling BS on that. Seriously, what's going on here?" Marcus was getting increasingly frustrated, almost proportionally to Ella's increasing suspicion. But of course, the most recent thing he had shifted into was a pigeon, so he couldn't work up enough courage to simply drag his friend away. OOC: Shapeshifting can cause Marcus' personality to fluctuate, depending on what he turns into.
