"Okay then," Marcus responded, wondering if they were just supposed to sit somewhere or wait for a room. He pointed at a couch and shrugged, so he and Ella hesitantly took a seat and waited to see if someone yelled at them. When no one did, they let themselves get comfortable.
"So, progress report?" Ella asked.
"Hm... Pigeon, cat, some type of fish, spider, seagull," Marcus replied, sighing. "That's not so great."
"Eh, the animals here are boring anyway. Maybe we can head somewhere more exotic and find something better. We can ask Ed where to look, I guess," Ella said, but her heart wasn't in it. They were very close to bringing a murderer to justice, and that seemed far more important than filling up Marcus' shapeshifting repertoire.

"Just relax, it's no big deal. I'll be back tomorrow" Ed said with a friendly smile as he walked out of the room. He walked through the lobby, up to the front desk, where the manager was waiting. After shooting the man a look, he slipped a card onto the desk and walked out. "The Jack of Hearts has guests. They're young and lost. Please treat them well. Rm. 03" Ed repeated to himself mentally. "Let's hope it works out..." He had a lot on his mind at the moment. For one, Anton had been murdered, right in front of Lizzie too... speaking of Lizzie, she was probably an emotional wreck... and, as much as Francis was a nice guy, he was not very good at talking with ladies... he really had to get home. But, there was also the whole three days matter... he'd have to come up with something to say, and fast. There was no way in Heaven or Hell that he was going to be able to get the money in time. He took out a cigarette "it's going to be a long night..."

The duo hadn't been sitting there two minutes when a sketchy-looking man came up to them. "Are you the Jack of Hearts guests?" He asked, looking at Marcus.
"Uh, I think so," Marcus answered.
"You mean Ed Valentine? Then yeah," Ella said, to the exasperation of the worker.
"Please refer to him as the Jack of Hearts here," he said quietly, but he led the two kids to their room regardless. After letting them know that they were free to use any amenities available, and that breakfast was served from nine to eleven A.M., he left them alone.
"So... What do you want to do all night?" Ella asked, peeking around the room uncomfortably. There were two beds, a table with four chairs, a more fancy looking sofa, and a bathroom. It wasn't anything extravagant, but it was still more than what they were used to and neither of them cared for it.
"I guess we could... Just go to sleep," Marcus offered, claiming the bed closest to the door. "Soft," he commented.
"Yeah, that's just a fine idea, Marcus. Really, good one," Ella said angrily. "C'mon, there is a MURDERER out there and Ed just wants us to hang out here? That is so... stupid."
"Well, he probably has to go comfort his sister tonight, and doesn't want to have to worry about us chasing somebody whose probably pretty dangerous," Marcus said.
"Why worry? We're competent, he knows that. You know what? Fine. Let's just wait until tomorrow." Still irritated, she climbed into the other bed and pulled the sheets up to her shoulders. "Good night."
"You too," Marcus replied, rolling his eyes. Both of them were asleep within ten minutes.

Meanwhile, Ed had managed to get to his apartment with little problem. It was a simple place, and he and Lizzie shared it happily. Speaking of... "Ed, you take over, I have no idea what I'm doing!" Francis said in a hushed tone as he rushed over to Ed. Ed didn't expect any less from him "It's alright, Francis, you've done your job fine." he handed the rather frazzled young man a bit of money for his trouble before adding "did the delivery go alright, once I left?" He nodded "Yeah, it went fine. Expect the cash tomorrow, I think." "I see..." Ed said thoughtfully "thanks, Francis, I really appreciate it...how's Lizzie?" Francis sighed and shook his head "how do you think? I think you'll do better than I did. Night, Ed" "Night" he called back, before walking into the living room, where Lizzie was sitting in a mess of tissues, glasses of water (Francis didn't think booze was a very good idea without Ed around...), and running mascara. "Ed!" she sobbed "T-th-they j-just sh-shot A-Anton out o-of nowhere! W-what did he ever d-do t-' a-a-anyone?!" Ed gave her a reassuring hug, saying "It'll be alright...I'll get to the bottom of this, I swear. He was my friend too, Lizzie...it just stinks of foul play..." They went on in a similar matter for the rest of the night, until Lizzie finally went to bed. Ed, meanwhile, had to sort some things out. But, he was tired...surely, those things could wait until morning.

Ella freaked the hell out when she woke up in a bed, not quite remembering how she got there. In a panic she threw her pillow at Marcus's face, which startled him awake and caused him to be half-out-the-window before they both remembered the events of last night and calmed down.
"Do you think Ed is going to come find us, or...?" Marcus asked, trying to slide smoothly back into the room and failing, landing painfully on the floor instead.
"Well, he better come find us," Ella stated, shutting the window after making sure nobody saw Marcus' failed escape attempt. "How are we supposed to find him?"
Marcus shrugged, and looked around for a while, thinking about what to do. Eventually he found the clock, which read nine-thirty A.M. "Breakfast!" He rejoiced, jumping back up onto his feet.
"Wait! I gotta change!" Ella called, but Marcus was already gone. He had never once missed a main meal in all the time she had known him. Annoyed, she took her time to get ready, then met her partner in the lobby's food-area, wondering if Ed was going to show up soon.

Meanwhile, Ed was already making his way over to the place. He was unbelievably tired but, there were things to do that day! But, first order of business: meet up with Ella and Marcus Didn't he just meet those kids yesterday? Oh, the things he does for strangers...a miracle he hadn't been murdered yet, in a town like Chicago... But, he could ponder that later. First of all, he needed to make sure they were safe. Then he could worry about his own stuff. There were two days left.

"What the hell is that?" Ella asked, poking a suspicious-looking meat on Marcus' plate with her fork.
"I dunno, but it' freakin' delicious," Marcus answered, eating half of it in one bite.
"Would you stop that?!" Ella hissed. "Stop saying everything is delicious! You have the taste buds of EVERY FEASIBLE LIVING CREATURE ever imagined by anyone! OF COURSE you think everything tastes good!"
"Jealous..." He said, giving her a devious smile for a moment but then continuing to finish off his second plate of every breakfast food the inn had to offer.
"You are so lucky this is free..." Ella said, laughing despite herself. She didn't really have an appetite for anything, especially not the greasiness of what the inn had to offer. She was just waiting for Ed to show up and hopefully give the a-ok for the murderer hunt she desperately wanted to go on.

Ed walked calmly into the hotel, giving a nod to the man in charge before approaching Marcus and Ella's table. "Enjoying the food?" he asked simply "it's not the absolute best, I'll admit but, it's still pretty good, all things considering"

"I love you," Marcus said quickly, before rushing up to get more food. Ella grabbed his sleeve and forced him back into his seat.
"Good god... Um, so, what's the news? How's your sister?" Ella asked, not wanting to outright ask to go looking for the criminal.

Ed pulled up a chair and sat down, chuckling slightly at Marcus' enthusiasm "Lizzie's fine, for now, at least. It was a rough night but, she's recovering. Such a sweet girl...I hate to see her cry like that..." he shook his head "but, that's besides the point. The first thing I want to do here is figure out how to get you two back home. This city is no place for two kids to be all by themselves. Trust me on this one, it's rough. Even if Marcus can turn into all sorts of creatures, I'm sure to assume..."

"Really, it is... no big deal," Ella said, unable to express just how not big of a deal it really was. She could have launched into a detailed story of all the crap she and Marcus had been through, but it would've taken far too long and been too exhausting for so early in the morning. "And I mean, if worst comes to worst, I'm sure our friends can find us. They're probably wandering around aimlessly at the moment..."
"The point is," Marcus interrupted, "We can probably help you more than you can help us, you know? And we owe you a favor since you fed us."
"That's not the real reason, but whatever," Ella said, smacking Marcus' forehead without so much as a blink. "But seriously, you have a shapeshifter on your side. Take advantage of that while you can."

"I would if I could, sweet-heart but, I don't think it'd be in any of our best interests." Ed sighed tiredly. He knew that a shape-shifter would be useful in many ways but, he didn't want to sell out a kid... besides, if someone with that power got into the wrong hands... God knows what would happen. He shuddered slightly at the thought. "And, like I said, my focus is to get you two home" it wasn't a complete lie. It was one of his main focuses that day. The other was figuring out how to pay the debt... He continued on nonetheless "is there any way I could help find your friends?"

"Um... Are there any major landmarks around?" Ella asked. "One of our friends is probably going around looking at the highlights of the city. Sort of an... interior design thing, if you will. So, I guess we just sort of need a tour of the city? Or you could just point us in the right direction."
"She has a thing for well-known landmarks. Like, on an internationally well-known level. Anything like that around here?" Marcus added.

ooc: I really hope I don't screw this part up! I know next-to-nothing about 1920's Chicago landmarks ; bic: Ed thought for a moment. "Well, there's Navy Pier, for one. It's a big tourist spot, lot of people go there. Maybe your friends are looking for you around there?" he asked.

OOC: I don't think anyone is judging you since we're the only two here. XP
BIC: "Well, they're not looking for us, but sure! Let's head there," Ella said. "And by the way, our friends are older than us, so if they give you the thumbs up, will you let us help you?" She had a feeling that her and Marcus' age was the big thing preventing the murderer-hunt from going down.
"Yeah, we're pretty in with the big kids," Marcus said, laughing. The two of them were half the age of most members of their group. It was weird to think about the enormous gap sometimes.
